Classification and Title:  Salaried & Exempt / Library Director

 

Supervisor:  CHCPL Board of Trustees

 Overview:

Under the general direction of the Library Board, the Library Director performs specialized tasks related to the supervision and operation of the Library. The Director is responsible for all hiring processes, facilities management, collection development, and the overall development and well-being of the physical library, as well as its staff, and patrons. Interacts with the public regularly and is expected to serve all patrons with tolerance and patience. The Library expects all employees to observe and develop our core values of motivation, positive attitude, and respect for others. The Director will strive to create a positive atmosphere of acceptance and access as well as exhibit a strong commitment to customer service, integrity, honesty, tolerance, flexibility and confidentiality.

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday 8:30-5
  • Every 6th Saturday 8:30-5

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Board Related
  • Considered the executive office of the Board.
  • Responsible for the operation of the library under the financial conditions set forth in the annual budget.
  • Draw up the agenda in consultation with the president.
  • Issue notices of all regular meetings, and on authorization of the president, of all special meetings.
  • Act as technical advisor to the board, recommend needed policies for board action.
  • Carry out policies of the library as adopted by the Board.
  • Report regularly to the library Board.
  • Library Related
  • Has sole charge of the administration of the library.
  • Responsible for the care of the building and the equipment.
  • Accountable for the efficiency of the library’s service to the public.
  • Responsible for the hiring and the dismissal of all personnel with prior Board approval.
  • Has full charge of the staff.
  • Suggests and carries out plans extending the library’s services.
  • Prepares regular reports embodying the library’s current progress and future needs.
  • Maintains an active program of public relations.
  • Knows local and state law; actively supports library legislation to the state and the nation.
  • Supervises the selecting and the ordering of all books and other library materials.
  • Affiliates with the state and national professional organizations.
  • Attends professional meetings and workshops.
  • Makes use of the services and suggestions of the regional librarian and the Department of Libraries and Archives.
  • Encourages support staff to attend workshops and conferences.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Circulation Desk Coverage
  • Perform all duties at the desk as needed
  • Shelves books and materials as needed
  • Read/Shift/Dust shelves on a regular basis
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

  • Required- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program
  • Required- Ability to work posted schedule and fill in when needed
  • Required- Kentucky Library Certification
  • Required- Library or Related Experience
  • Required- Library/Information Science Coursework
  • Must be able to pass a background check

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and staff members
  • Ability to communicate verbally effectively
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions
  • Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to put materials in alphabetical and/or numerical order
  • Ability to adhere to prescribed routines
  • Ability to type
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, and scanners/fax machines

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Must be able to do light to medium lifting pushing or pulling of library materials (20-50 lbs.) For 4-8 hour shifts
  • Must be able to reach above the shoulder, bend, stoop, kneel and climb to replace library materials
  • Must be able to empty book carts and boxes
  • Must be able to stock copier
  • Must be able to push book trucks or carts the length and breadth of the library
  • Must be able to identify materials on shelving up to 90 inches
  • Must be able to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of type sizes
  • Must be able to finger cards, forms, files, etc.
  • Work environment must be climate controlled
  • Work environment must have little or no exposure to dust
  • Work environment must be smoke-free
